Bunny Chow is a Durban street food staple from South Africa’s Indian community, created in the 1940s. It’s a hollowed-out loaf of white bread filled with spicy curry (often mutton, chicken, or beans)—no utensils needed, just tear and eat.

Portable, hearty, and flavorful, it reflects apartheid-era ingenuity.

Ingredients (serves 4):

  • 1 loaf unsliced white bread, cut into quarters/half
  • Curry: mutton/chicken/beans, potatoes, onions, tomatoes
  • Spices: curry powder, garam masala, chili, ginger, garlic
  • Fresh coriander

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Sauté onions, garlic, ginger; add spices.
  2. Brown meat (if using); add tomatoes and potatoes.
  3. Simmer with water until tender and saucy.
  4. Hollow out bread loaves, reserving crumbs.
  5. Fill with curry; top with reserved bread or salad.
  6. Garnish with coriander; eat by hand.

Tips: Use day-old bread for sturdiness; vegetarian bean version is popular too.
